City's geography
Sandspits settled, but prone to obliteration by storms.
city comprised of low-lying sandspits and flat land in west, then tallish cliffs in north around craters, along the southeast coast, and bits here and there. The area between the cliffs on the east side is hilly. 3 adjacent islands, N, W, and E. Eastern has causeway.
Two promontories flank the city island.
The north one has hilly margins except in east. Another large round harbour exists here.
The southern does not have as good a harbour but has an acceptable one. The southern promontory has a ridge of volcanic rock dividing it into east and west portions. there are three islands off this, one low sandy one to the west and two rugged rocky ones to the north.
The currents in the strait are powerful and tricky. The northern side of the strait has a cold water current flowing through it and the southern has a warm current. This conflux of streams parts again around the main island which creates unpredictable fog and weather. These currents have created two long sandspits on the western side of the island. Between these is a large harbour with a quay.
Maneuvering the many small and large ferries that traverse the straits is a profession that requires a lot of training. During slack tide is when the most ferries operate. They run day and night.
Despite these inconveniences, the ruling jackal family carefully selected this location due to its exceptional positioning on major trade routes, which in time they'd come to control most of.
